Advent Season 2024
Advent at West Point Grey Baptist Church
As the days grow shorter and the air carries the crispness of winter, Advent invites us into a season of waiting, hope, and wonder. It’s a time to reflect on the beauty of Christ’s coming and to prepare our hearts for the celebration of His birth. This year at WPGBC, our Advent series will lead us through four profound themes, each drawing us deeper into the story of Emmanuel—God with us.
Week 1: The Gift of Community
We begin Advent with the story of Mary’s visit to Elizabeth (Luke 1:39-45). In this tender moment, we see the power of community as these two women, both carrying miraculous news, find strength, joy, and encouragement in one another. This Sunday, we’ll explore the gift of relationships in our own lives and how God works through community to bring His promises to life. Let’s celebrate the ways we can be an Elizabeth to someone in need of encouragement or a Mary seeking connection.
Week 2: God on the Move
The second week of Advent shifts our focus to movement and migration with the shepherds in Luke 2:8-18. The good news of great joy compels them to leave their fields and go in search of the Savior. Our God is a God who moves—He seeks, sends, and leads His people into new places and unexpected encounters. Together, we’ll reflect on how God’s movement invites us to step out in faith and follow Him wherever He leads.
Week 3: Seeking the Saviour
In week three, we journey with the Magi in their relentless pursuit of the newborn King (Matthew 2:1-12). These wise men traveled far and overcame obstacles to lay their gifts before Jesus. Their story reminds us that seeking God is always worth the effort, no matter how long the journey or how challenging the path. This Sunday, we’ll reflect on what it means to seek God with intentionality and how He meets us in our longing for Him.
Week 4: The Gift of Presence
Advent culminates with the awe-inspiring truth of God’s incarnation (Matthew 1:18-23; Luke 2:10-20). Jesus—Immanuel—came to be with us, not as a distant figure but as God in the flesh, sharing our joys and sorrows, our struggles and hopes. On this final Sunday of Advent, we’ll celebrate the wonder of His presence in our lives today and the promise that He will never leave us.
Advent is a season of wonder, not only because of the stories we remember but because of the ways they transform our hearts and point us toward the hope and joy we find in Jesus. My prayer is that this series will deepen our faith, draw us closer together as a community, and help us enter the Christmas season with hearts full of gratitude and worship.
Let’s prepare Him room together.
Blessings,
